Spanish-Language Editor - Freelance

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art believes in the power of illustrated stories to connect us. With a growing collection that encompasses artworks from across cultures, places, times, and mediums, including paintings, sculptures, murals, photography, comic art, book and magazine illustrations, and the arts of filmmaking, the museum will explore narrative art's potential to prompt questions, invite opinions, inspire community, and move people to think about the impact of images on our world.

Co-founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the Lucas Museum was designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec as executive architect and is under construction in Los Angeles's Exposition Park. An 11-acre campus with extensive new green space designed by Studio-MLA will embrace the museum's 300,000-square-foot building, which will feature expansive galleries, two state-of-the-art theaters, and dedicated spaces for learning and engagement, dining, retail, and events.

Responsibilities

The Spanish-Language Editor is a freelance, remote role reporting to the Director of Editorial and Publications. This editor will be responsible for developing, reviewing, and finalizing Spanish-language editorial content for the museum's opening. Collaborating with the Project Editor, Copyeditor, Managing Editor, museum staff, and external vendors, the Spanish Editor will ensure consistency, accuracy, and high-quality standards across a range of public-facing materialsincluding exhibition texts, object labels, audio guides, signage, and more.

  • Collaborate with English-language editorial staff to develop and maintain all Spanish-language materials, including style guides and bilingual signage
  • Review, edit, and finalize object labels and other interpretive texts for inaugural exhibitions
  • Work with the Rights and Reproductions team to confirm accurate translation of credit information, ensuring necessary approvals
  • Provide guidance to internal and external editorial teamspress, marketing, signage, newsletterson Spanish-language consistency and standards
  • Coordinate with the Managing Editor to track project status using the museum's editorial project management tools (primarily Airtable)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Spanish, humanities, anthropology, or a related field (master's degree preferred); relevant experience may be considered in lieu of formal education
  • Minimum seven years of editorial experience in Latin American Spanish, ideally in a museum, publishing, or other cultural context
  • Experience working in or with museums, galleries, or cultural institutionsparticularly in Los Angelesis strongly preferred
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a collaborative approach to editing
  • Strong decision-making and project implementation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and negotiation skills
  • Proven record of producing high-quality editorial content
  • Self-motivated, organized, and responsive, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a start-up environment

$35 - $35 an hour
