Job Description

We are seeking motivated and talented students who want to help us solve some of the most complex challenges in financial technology. Technology teams at CME write and maintain ultra low-latency electronic trading platforms, risk management systems, and front-end trading interfaces, all of which are central to CME’s business. We are focused on designing, building and deploying customer focused solutions with passion and precision.

CME’s Technology Summer Internship program offers students opportunities to learn more about CME’s business, our role in the financial industry, and the types of technology that keep our markets running. Students will develop both their technical skills and expand their network with access to industry experts, while working alongside other talented and ambitious students with a passion for FinTech.

The Global Information Security (GIS) Department is a critical component of CME’s Technology Division with a mission to ensure digital safety of the firm’s employees and markets. The Cyber Defense Response intern will join the Cyber Defense Team, and help respond to cyber attacks targeting the firm. This work entails validating security events escalated by other analysts and following established procedures to contain the impact of these attacks. The intern can expect to lead lower severity incidents and assist in the analysis of higher severity incidents. In addition to handling security issues, other responsibilities involve project management (building, updating, and modifying technology) and process documentation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a college/university degree in computer science, cybersecurity, or another related field

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Coursework in subject areas such as digital forensics, incident response, security engineering, and/or cloud security

  • Development experience with Python, including work with REST APIs

  • Data Analysis experience with Splunk, Chronicle, ArcSight, or other SIEM/log management technology

  • Experience conducting quantitative or qualitative research using AI, machine learning, and/or statistical analysis methods

  • Fluency in programmatic analysis of large datasets (e.g. with Pandas)

  • Previous work with cloud services (GCP, AWS, Azure, etc.), understanding of common enterprise network appliances and associated networking protocols

  • Work/internship experience in areas like digital forensics, incident response, security engineering, and/or cloud security

Ideal candidates typically demonstrate:

  • Excellent communication skills and very strong attention to detail

  • A strong academic record with a demonstrated ability to innovate

  • Unusually high levels of motivation and a palpable passion for learning

  • Exceptional level of curiosity and track record of self-teaching advanced concepts

  • A peculiar interest in reading technical documentation and the inner workings of various technologies

  • A joy for problem solving and a slight tendency to get lost in deep research

  • A passion for collecting facts and sharing/debating them
