Job Description

DEFINITION:

Under general supervision, the Fingerprint Technician takes fingerprints using Live Scan System or inked impressions. Essential functions include individuals; taking palm prints; interviewing individuals; documenting demographic and other vital information; classifying fingerprints; searching fingerprints using Automated Fingerprint Identification System; assigning tracking numbers; taking photographs of individuals; checking names of individuals fingerprinted and photographed on computer database; transmitting fingerprint and other identification information to Department of Justice; reviewing incoming data sheets; interacting with other law enforcement agencies; and typing correspondence and forms.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Supervision by Support Services Coordinator. This position does not exercise any supervision.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES:

This class is the entry level for the employee who is assigned simple, routine duties involving the taking, classification, searching and matching of fingerprints.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Fingerprint individuals using Live Scan system or inked impression for identification, comparison and record keeping purposes (E) Takes palm prints using manual rolling process, for identification, comparison and record keeping purposes. (E) Interview individuals to obtain demographic and vital statistics information, i.e., height, weight, date of birth, place of birth and identifying marks. (E) Documents demographic and other relevant information by entering the information into the computer database and on a log sheet. (E) Searches fingerprints using Automated Fingerprint Identification System for comparison and identification purposes. (E) Assigns appropriate tracking number for identification and record keeping. (E) Takes photographs Police Department employees for identification and record keeping purposes. (E) Checks the names of individuals fingerprinted and photographed, on a computer database for outstanding warrants and registrations of sex, narcotics and arson offenders. (E) Transmits fingerprint and other identification information to Department of Justice via NATMS (Network AFIS Transaction Management System) for criminal identification purposes. (E) Reviews incoming CII and FBI “rap sheets” from Federal and State law enforcement agencies for duplicate tracking numbers. (E) Check the name of individuals fingerprinted against the sex offender database. Interacts with other law enforcement agencies to exchange fingerprint and other relevant identification information. (E) Retrieves fingerprint and other relevant information from bureau files or computer databases for authorized individuals and agencies. (E) Reviews fingerprint and other bureau identification files on a routine basis for eliminating obsolete records. (E) Types correspondence and forms using computer or typewriter. (E) Maintain files and records related to assigned activities; review and verify the accuracy and completeness of various documents; process forms and applications. (E) Receive, greet and direct visitors; respond to inquiries and provide a variety of general information to District personnel and the general public (E) Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation Telephone, terminal, teletype and radio operating requirements and techniques

ABILITY TO:

Communicate orally on a one-to-one basis for the purpose of obtaining and receiving information Write in a clear, concise and logical manner to complete forms and to draft correspondence Type 40 WPM using computer keyboard/typewriter to input and retrieve data and to complete forms Interact effectively and courteously with the general public and other law enforcement personnel, maintain self-control in stressful and/or hostile situations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Six months of verifiable experience as a fingerprint technician in a governmental law enforcement agency where the principal duties of the position included taking fingerprints, classifying, and searching of files; OR Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to: Graduation from the twelfth grade and one (1) year of clerical or business experience involving giving of information to the public, or in the operation of a telephone switchboard, or radio equipment. Typing certificate for 40 wpm dated within the last six months must be submitted with application. Ability to understand and speak Spanish is desirable. Licenses and Other Requirements: This classification requires a valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency within three months of employment Will be required to successfully complete a background investigation.
